While working at PSA Design Studio, under the wing of Ar. Paramjit S Ahuja (two-time chairman of the Indian Institute of Architects - Nagpur Chapter), apart from architectural design, my role involved helping organise events and a major part of my stint was the
'Limited Architectural Design Competition for Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur'.
organized as per Council of Architecture (CoA), Delhi, guidelines. Essentially, a 'limited' or 'closed' competition implies that designers participate by invitation, as opposed to an 'open' competition.
In simple terms, the competition was floated to solicit the best design proposals for the new campus of National Law University, Nagpur. My work on this project spanned a full-time employment at PSADS and a freelance position with NLU-N.
Refer to the timeline below:
My timeline from Sept 2016 to Feb 2018
The Maharashtra National Law University of Nagpur sought to establish a permanent state-of-the-art campus at Waranga, Wardha, for which the Government of India sanctioned the required funding, under the chairmanship of the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra in July 2016.
The Chancellor and then Chief Justice of India, Hon'ble Shri Justice S A Bobde constituted an Infrastructure Development and Monitoring Committee (IDMC) to monitor the development of the new campus.
In the first IDMC meeting in July 2016, the IDMC resolved to hold a Limited Architectural Design Competition.
Ar. PSA was in charge of leading the Competition process, understanding NLU-N's requirements in detail, recommending the best architects/firms accordingly, formulating the Competition Brief, undertaking the competition as per CoA guidelines, and seeing the whole exercise through to completion.
3 hour deliberations would be held each weak, with pre-decided agendas, to discuss and finalize the qualitative and quantitative requirements, the vision, in extraordinary detail.
Me and a diligent intern would religiously take notes without missing a single piece of information!
In the presence of Hon'ble Justice B R Gavai, (Supreme Court of India) and Chancellor, Hon'ble Justice R C Chavan (Former Bombay HC Judge), a team of specialist consultants, IDMC, high government officials, Ar. PSA, and I would get together to review the progress, get advice on any issues, and solidify certain decisions.
We had the beautiful experience of spending an evening in the presence of Hon'ble Shri Justice S A Bobde, Former Chief Justice of India. He reminded us of the heart of this project, the vision of building a Gurukul for future lawyers of the country. We discussed logic, law, philosophy, and Kant in his cozy backyard. :)
Once we had all the (mind-blowingly) detailed requirements for each corner of the campus, I started drafting sections of the competition brief, collecting reference photographs, international examples, and chapterizing the content to be bit by bit reviewed by PSA.

Each and every area of the campus design was paid intricate attention to. From macro to micro issues - like mobility on campus, adherence to the sustainable and green mission of the university in terms of self-reliant models in the usage of solar energy, biogas and waste management, water and sewage treatment, etc. Design of sports complex, cricket pitches, classrooms, indoor lighting across all spaces, accommodations for students and staff, hostel balconies and their aesthetics, moot courts, auditorium, kitchen and food to be prepared, food streets, central amenities area, large library, indoor sports complex and its seating, landscape and vegetation - flora and fauna expected on the land, and so on.
With that in mind, the IDMC invited a diverse team of consultants to guide the organizers on the best practices and advice.
Solar Energy Consultant
Waste Management Consultant
Water Treatment Consultant
Green Building Accreditation Experts (LEED and GRIHA)
Geotechnical Experts (Lab)
Topographical Surveyor
Office Design Consultant
Kitchen Consultant
Law Educators
Philosopher
Each of the consultants delivered presentations on the best practices to adopt for the respective areas.
Geotech Labs analyzed the soil on site to determine the quantity of mud bricks possible to make using the soil that would be dug up for foundations and swimming pool, etc.
They also ran durability and strength and compression tests to evaluate the suitability of the soil to take loads. They prescribed the required treatment of the soil to make it suitable for the cricket pitch.
On the other hand, the topographical surveyors delivered Site Contour plans which were appended to the Competition Brief.
I incorporated the data obtained from the consultant presentations and the internal deliberations and started writing chapters and sections while PSA reviewed and approved.
In parts, I would then send these chapters along with images to the publication designers. I critically supervised the design process to a T.
I searched for the best international examples for design and structure, and we built on it. We selected the right paper and format for the book, too.
Right from minutely overseeing the design of every inch of every page, approving the right cover design with desired color scheme and theme, Selecting the printing and binding details, visiting the print and binding shops to supervise and finalize the final hardback copy of the brief -
I completed the endeavor, handed over the brief, and
decided to give a sweet end to this chapter
to leave with incredible learnings.
NLU-N hired me as a freelance co-curator for the exhibitions, in co-operation with the Indian Institute of Architects - Nagpur Center (IIA-NC).
I worked with Ar. PSA again, along with Ar. Parikshit and Ar. Kshitij from IIA-NC.
While the participants worked on their designs, I acted as the point of contact to receive and sometimes answer queries.
I majorly assisted with all critical correspondences to make sure there are no technical errors, misspellings and miscommunications, and the correct attachments are sent to the correct set of recipients at the right time.
On April 1, 2017, all the participants were invited for a site visit and a Q&A session, for which I handled the presentation and technical end, IDMC and Ar. PSA resolved the queries and received kind compliments for perhaps the best brief the architects had witnessed, and 5 team members from PSA DS as responsible stenographers (at the back).
Seizing the golden opportunity of having 10 of the best architects of India together in a city, Ar. PSA and the IIA-NC organized an architectural panel discussion on the topic:
'Fetish for the Object'
where the panelists and audience discussed the (in)famous, apparent, fetish of architects and historic starchitects, for objects or artistic physical forms.

Yours truly emceeing the event.
I led the compilation of all the questions received and answers/resolutions decided in the Q&A session and documented some consequent amendments to the competition rules as a result of the exercise. The booklet was printed in two parts and provided as a part of the entire Competition Brief to refer to.
4 months after the release of the Competition Brief, Stage 1 of design submissions was received.
I created a detailed form to record submitted items from each participant, received the representatives to the submission venue i.e. the old NLU-N building, guided them to fill out the forms and all details, and helped them with safe storage of their sheets + models.
Ar. Parikshit from IIA-NC and Dr. N M Sakarkar, the Registrar of MNLU-N, handling the submissions.
Suggested travel itineraries to the Jurors, handled tickets and sent for reimbursement, arranged accommodation.
Designed Jury Assement Files - with the name of the juror, entry codes, pages for scoring as per criteria, and space for notes. I also handpicked the folders and had slip-in covers designed on brand.
Prof. (Dr.) Vijender Kumar, VC's Juror's Assesment File - Front, Back covers and spine.
Now that we had the submitted deliverables, we had the quantity and sizes of the sheets and models to be displayed.
The search for suitable venues began, and Chitnavis Centre designed by Ar. PSA himself was finalized. We started designing the display, Ar. Parikshit, Ar. Kshitij, and I.
Eventually, we zeroed in on a simple layout with ample space to view the entries and move around the area with ease, ensuring convenience to both, the jurors and the public audience.
Concept plans, detailed plans, selection of appropriate display surface, materials for fabrication of the display framework, sufficient lighting and its positioning, all such details were explained to the fabricator.
Branding area allocated along the entry points of the exhibition area. The color scheme was in line with the NLU-N logo - with the colors
RED, BLUE, and WHITE.
Finally, the exhibition was on display - with all heavyweight models stable and perfectly resting in the quiet hall. I provided secretarial assistance during the 3 days of the jury. Nobody apart from the jurors and myself were allowed entry in the venue.
After careful consideration by the esteemed jury, the scores were allotted and the winners were determined! After the announcement of the winners, press releases were sent out in English and local languages, a press conference was held, and the exhibition was made open to public with an amazing amount of footfall from the people of Nagpur city.
Jurors engaged in discussion around the design entries.

Architecture Paradigm from Bengaluru - architects Sandeep Jain and Vimal Jain were declared winners of the competition.
Upon further discussions, as per the competition process, they later submitted the next stage detailed drawings, and required steps were taken by NLU-N and the committee to ultimately begin the phase-wise execution of the campus.
The winners were felicitated.
