As a curator and then curation manager, I managed the textual and visual content on the website.
I wrote and reviewed competition briefs on the platform, coordinated with clients to deliver briefs in line with their vision and requirements, wrote articles and blogs, announcements & news, help articles, etc.
I also devised some promotional campaigns, and designed and supervised the marketing collateral like posters, social media posts, newsletters, videos, graphics for blogs, like banners, product mockups, cover images for webpages, etc. I also executed successful Search Engine Optimization (SEO) of over 1500 pages.
Apart from the above, I served as designer and editor for the yearbook publications; contributed to customer support, and managed operations for 9 months.
Being a part of a tightly-knit team in a startup, I also supported the design and development team on the UI and UX of the newer web pages. Our approach, although, didn't involve proper market research, we adopted an iterative process and developed our webpages through iterations, trials, errors, observations, inductions, and reiteration. A lot of our decision-making drew from our observations through customer support and common patterns we experienced with our users, like competition participants, across the globe.
The pages were divided into 3 broad sections:
For Designers: Membership, Portfolio, Publication, Institutional Access.
For Experts: Become a Curator / Mentor / Juror
For Businesses: List / Sponsor / Host a Competition
Snapshots of some of the latest webpages for which I wrote the copy and contributed to the design.
The pages were structured as:
Short description of the service/feature,
Key USPs
Highlighted Stats (if applicable)
Benefits of the service/feature explained OR Steps/Guide
Plans offered OR Examples from the platform
FAQs
Web pages L to R: Become a Curator, Build a Portfolio, Launch a competition on UNI
As a curator and later curation manager, I wrote and guided the creation of in-house and client-facing competition briefs.
Some of the examples featured below are from a few of the earlier competitions on the platform which included PDF format downloadable brief documents.
We later removed the document feature and converted the briefs totally into web page content, which largely helped in achieving our new SEO targets.
Following are excerpts from some document format briefs.
1. Breaking Work
A competition to envision the nature of future workplaces- proposing architectural solutions to a workhub that incorporates ‘how idea of work is conceptualized, and how it is portrayed in 2040’. The challenge encourages speculation of current and emerging technology/economics/culture trends.
The brief, therefore, outlined the premise, illustrated the problem with relevant and easy-to-understand graphics, diagrams, site conditions and guidelines, submission rules, etc.
2. Black Taj
The competition was to design a unique version of the widely speculated Black Taj which was rumored to be built behind the site of the legendary Taj Mahal, Agra, India.
The brief document described the vision and design problem along with illustrating the site plan and necessary details in graphical format.
3. DESIGN FOR PROTEST - Rise, Resist, Remember
This was a competition hosted on UNI by a design event company Design X Design, based in Delhi. The client brief included a draft and some discussions out of which I extracted the following keywords that were of prime importance to the organisers:
Protest, thought-provoking, democratic, unbiased, neutral, inclusive, cultural and geographic diversity
1. The clients were extremely meticulous with the execution of their vision. All photographs, media, and each word HAD to reflect their intent. Every word and image was very carefully selected and all stakeholders were happy in the end. Yay!
2. The competition was categorized into 3 challenges of varying nature and scale.
3. The hosts had specially demanded an exceptional, geographically and culturally diverse jury panel - which, ultimately, we were able to get on booard after some personal persuasion on my end to some hard-to-get professionals in the architectural field.
Carefully worded taglines and selection of photographs to reflect inclusion and geo-cultural diversity even in the examples the brief featured.
